Samuel R. Randall

Samuel R. Randall, 88, of Central City, formerly of Clarks, died Friday, January 13, 2012 at Litzenberg Long Term Care in Central City, NE.  Funeral services will be Monday, January 16, at 10:00 A.M. at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City with Pastor Janet Burgel officiating.  Burial will be in Bureau Cemetery by Pierce Chapel near Clarks.  Military rites will be performed by Clarks VFW Post 4832.  Visitation will be Sunday, January 15, from 4:30 to 6 P.M. at the funeral home. 

Sam was born on May 10, 1923 on a farm near Forest City, Missouri, to Samuel Hayes and Bertha Beatrice (Ross) Randall.  The family moved to Merrick County in 1930.

In 1940, Sam worked for Overland Sand and Gravel Company for 2 summers.  He was drafted into the United States Army on June 18, 1945 and took his basic training in Fort Lewis, Washington.  He was assigned to the ‘120 the Station Hospital of the 3rd Army in Germany and was honorably discharged on November 22, 1946. 

He was united in marriage to Velma D. Bush in Clarks, NE at the Methodist minister’s home on November 28, 1947 with Don and Elaine Rice as attendants.  The couple lived in Clarks, and was blessed with two daughters, Marilyn Kay, and Nancy Jean. 

Sam worked for the Telephone Company, and then went to work for Jean Brown on his farm for five years.  He farmed for two years north of Central City, and then sold out and went back to work for Overland Sand and Gravel Company from June of 1955 thru December of 2007. 

He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 4832 in Clarks.  He served as a Chaplain for several years.  He was also a member of the Clarks Fire Department for 18 years. 

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Clyde Church of Grand Island, NE; and Nancy and Mark Myhre of Iron River, WI, grandchildren, Jason and Jody Church of Omaha, NE; and Jared and Elaine Church of Grand Island, NE, great grandchildren, John and Jackson Church of Omaha, NE, and Casey, Nicole, Brandon, and Kaylie Church of Grand Island, NE, a sister-in-law, Irene Schultz of Central City, NE, and several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Velma Randall, three sisters, Madge Elliot, Dorothy McMillan and Margaret Randall, brothers, Chalmer, Claude (Hayes) and wife Martha, Grandville, Donald and wife Alva, Joseph and wife Helen, Martine and wife Amy, and Herbert Randall, son-in-law, Ken Boehm, and a grandson, Adam Drew Church.
