Charles L. Matz Jr.

Charles L. Matz Jr., 86, of Central City, died Sunday, January 29, 2012 at Litzenberg Long Term Care in Central City.  Funeral services will be Monday, February 6, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City with Pastor Scott Johnson officiating.  There is no visitation.  Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery. 

Charles was born on July 29, 1925 in Oconto, Nebraska to Clara (Carlson) and Charles Matz, Sr.  He attended a country grade school in Oconto that he and his sister rode a horse to.  He continued his education at Oconto High School and was in the first class to graduate from the new high school in 1943. 

He entered the United States Army in 1943, and was stationed in the Philippines.  He was honorably discharged in 1945. 

Charles met his future wife, Velda Porter in high school, and when he got out of the service they were married in February of 1947.  He worked for Walter Matz in Cozad for three years.  Then the couple moved to Grand Island in 1953, and Charles worked at Fair Acres Dairy.    

He was a member of the American Legion Club and he enjoyed Nebraska football, Bing Crosby, and family reunions.  His favorite hobby was fishing.   

Survivors include a son, Gary Matz of Loveland, CO, a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Marty Childs of Kearney, NE, three grandchildren, Chuck (Carey) Childs, Scott Matz, and Tricia (Josh) Hartley, three great-grandchildren, Zachary Childs, Noah Hartley, Declan Hartley, and two step-great-grandchildren, Lexi and Alyssa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Velda, and his sister, Margaret May.
